SMART IEP Goal Formula

This formula breaks down the components needed to write a complete and measurable IEP goal.

Goal Components and Explanations

  1. Time Frame: Includes the IEP end date or a specific date by which the goal will be mastered.

  2. Supports (if applicable): What supports the student will use (e.g., prompting, cues, staff support).

  3. Setting/Context: Where the skill will be mastered (e.g., general education classroom, pull-out sessions, role play).

  4. Skill: The specific action the student will perform. Be as specific as possible (e.g., "accommodations self-advocacy skills" instead of "self-advocacy skills").

  5. Accuracy Level: The target level for mastery (e.g., 80%, 9 out of 10 opportunities, 5 out of 6 trials).

  6. Assessment: How you will measure the skill (e.g., weekly data spreadsheet, assessment or checklist). Avoid "teacher observation."

Full Goal Structure

The goal follows this order:

By (Time Frame), given (Supports), in (Setting/Context), the student will (Skill), in/with (Accuracy Level), as measured by (Assessment).
